It has been a while since we have posted here so we thought what better time to give you a glimpse into everything that has been going on with us currently…
Currently Reading – I enjoy sitting out on our patio for about 30 minutes each morning before I start my day, and recently realized this would be a good time to read some of those books that I have been meaning to for some time. I set myself a goal to read 12 books within the next 12 months, and had Lorne upload them to my Kobo and I got started. Turns out I may need to set a new goal, as I ended up reading four books during the month of April alone! Mind you, these are not those big, deep, thought-provoking books. The books I started with are easy reading, perfect for relaxing. The four I finished were The Tennis Party, A Desirable Residence, Swimming Pool Sunday and The Gatecrasher, all by Madelaine Wickham (aka Sophie Kinsella). I am planning to read all 30 of her books before I move onto another author. Lorne was also bitten by the reading bug and decided on the Lewis Carroll “Alice” series, starting with Alice in Wonderland and then will be moving on to Through the Looking Glass and The Hunting of the Snark.
Currently Watching – Thanks to our VPN, we are still able to keep up with a lot of TV shows we used to watch back in Canada, and as well have recently enjoyed a couple of new shows. Severance is quite the science fiction psychological thriller, and we are happy it has been renewed for a second season. We just finished the second season of Russian Doll, in which the first season was a little like “Groundhog Day” and the second season was even weirder. We have also been re-watching some old TV shows from years ago and it has been a completely different experience watching them now as adults compared to when we watched them when we were much younger. Last year we finished the complete series of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Bob Newhart, WKRP in Cincinnati, and Newhart. This year we have been making our way through Cheers and News Radio. And besides all the oldies but goodies, we have also enjoyed watching some Australian TV shows. Most recently we have finished up Packed to the Rafters, Always Greener, The Alice, and have now started into The Flying Doctors.
Currently Eating – We have ventured out in the past few months to try some local taco places. We went to Tacos Guss in San Jose Del Cabo earlier in the year and more recently we went to Tacos Gardenias in downtown Cabo San Lucas. Tacos Guss, being a little more off the tourist path was a fair bit cheaper, and Tacos Gardenias being right in the heart of the tourist zone was pricier, but both places had such amazing food, and we really enjoyed everything we tried. We sampled a variety of tacos, (at Tacos Guss we had carne asada, al pastor, pollo, and lengua / at Tacos Gardenias we had camaron and pescado) which come to the table with simply the meat or seafood in a warm tortilla, and then you proceed to add any and all toppings you desire. At Tacos Gardenia’s we also enjoyed an amazing seafood molcajete, which is a seafood stew (shrimp, octopus, fish, scallops in a sauce of salsa and cheese) cooked and served in a hot stone bowl and served with fresh warm tortillas. Simply delicious!
Currently Drinking – After all the fun we had with our Advent Cocktail Calendar in December 2020, we have continued to find new and exciting cocktails to try. More recently, we have been enjoying some gin drinks, like a Negroni or the occasional Gin and Tonic. And as everything evolves, the Negroni lead us to the Boulevardier (a Negroni with bourbon instead of gin) which has quickly become one of Lorne’s favourites. Besides cocktails, while out for tacos we tried our first Michelada which is now our new favourite Mexican drink. It is made with beer, lime juice, assorted sauces, spices, tomato juice (or clamato) and chili peppers and served in a chili-salt rimmed glass. I have been wanting to try one for a while, but Lorne was skeptical (he’s not a fan of tomato juice in beer), but he decided to give it a go and now we will need to order one whenever we are out for tacos.
Currently Wearing – No fashionistas here, the closest we get to being dressed up these days is taking off our “around the house” shorts to put on our “going out” shorts. It’s simply shorts and tee shirts every day. The only exception to this was during the winter when the temperatures dropped so low (20C / 68F) and we had to bundle up in our sweatpants and hoodies while sitting outside.
Currently Planning – Our project list is gradually getting a little smaller so hopefully we will be able to do some before-and-after photos of our place soon. We are currently in the process of finishing off the guest bedroom and ensuite and then our next project will be a patio refresh. A few months ago, we bought a new counter height patio table which, being higher, gives us even better views while eating outside. The dimensions of this new table provided us with enough remaining space to add a little conversation set – two chairs and a table, which gives us more places to sit and relax outside. The refresh will include recovering the chair cushions, adding some interlocking deck tiles, as well as some wall décor. We are also looking into changing our stand-alone barbeque into more of an outdoor kitchen area.
Currently Exploring – The cost of electricity in Mexico is pretty much on par with what we were paying for electricity back in BC (approximately $0.13 per kWh). However, with practically unlimited sunshine all year long in Cabo, solar power is becoming more and more popular here and we have started to explore the possibility of installing solar panels on our roof. This means that all of that free sunshine would be able to power our home and reduce our energy bill significantly. And the fact that cloudy days are few and very far between means this location is ideal for taking advantage of solar power. We have asked our property manager to source out some quotes for us and are hoping to have it up and running within the next six months. According to information we have gathered, it should pay for itself in about five years of electricity savings.
Currently Following – In the news, it was reported that more than 325,000 tourists visited Los Cabos (comprised of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo) in the month of March, which set a new monthly record for visitor numbers. Normally, most of our tourists come from the US and Canada. However, in March, 97% of our visitors were Mexican which is a big change from previous years. In March, Mexico celebrates Holy Week which combines the religious observance of Easter, along with an annual vacation period. Many companies shut down for the week between Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday and families travel to popular vacation destinations to spend time together at the beach. And due to the increased promotion of Los Cabos to the Mexican domestic market, many chose to spend Holy Week here. The beaches here were packed with tents, canopies and umbrellas while families enjoyed a great time together.

Wow !
So envious about all of this post , but oddly enough mostly about the electricity. Using my handy dandy currency exchange calculator, I figured out that we use $0.82 per kWh daytime, and $0.68 per kWh evenings and weekends ………….and it goes up again in October !
