Our Home

Moving to a new place can be a very overwhelming undertaking, especially if you are moving to a new country.  And sometimes when you move to another country, you may find you need to change.

It’s been a month now since we moved to Cabo San Lucas, and I still remember waking up that first morning in our new home, and saying to myself “Ok, don’t panic!”.  It was hot, it was confusing, and it was foreign.  And in that moment of panic, I wondered what we had done.

However, after living here for a while we found our definition and sense of home has changed.  We’ve discussed many times over the past few weeks about how we own this condo and we also own all the stuff that came with the condo (it came fully furnished, including dishes, glassware, pots & pans, cutlery etc).  However, none of it was really ours. It’s like it’s all ours (because we own it), but not really ours (because well, it’s not really “our” stuff).  Confusing?  I know, right!

Our (own) stuff is still waiting in Vancouver for our residency process to be complete before it can be shipped to us.  So, not only are we living in a foreign land, but it also feels like we are living in a foreign home, someone else’s vacation rental.  We kept thinking, if only we had our (own) stuff here, it would really start to feel like our home then.

We found we needed to take some time to adjust, adapt and acclimatize.  We needed to become used to our new situation, used to our new conditions and most definitely, used to the natural environment (so much sweating happened in those first few weeks at 35C!).

Then suddenly, something clicked and we realized:

  • home is not a bunch of stuff, it’s a feeling
  • home is where memories are created
  • home is made by the people who live here
  • home is where your wifi connects automatically
  • home is a sense of community, which comes along once you start to see those familiar faces each day

Today, home is most definitely Cabo San Lucas.

And one day, when all our stuff arrives, this home will be where we finally hang our hat (you know, our own hat)!
